Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger?
There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese Legend…
Thumb represents your Parents
Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings
Middle finger represents your-Self
Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner
& the Last (Little) finger represents your children
Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together – back to back
Secondly, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb – tip to tip
(As shown in the figure below):
Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)…, they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later.
Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)…., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives.
Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children)…., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day.
Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse).
You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT….., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives – through thick and thin!!

No, actually, it isn't bulllshit. It's still a nice bit of story/legend. Also, given that cross-culturally, divorce is a relatively new thing, it still stands to reason that this was relevant when the story was originated. Keep your bitter comments to yourself.

Personally I found it ridiculous, wake up man. life and relationship are too complex to be defined by finger behaviors. I hate to be a spoilsport so sorry for all those who find it lovely and romantic. No offense meant.

You can thank your flexor digitorum profundus. It is one of the muscles that allow your four fingers to extend. It originates(begins) on the upper forearm as one muscle and then fans out further down towards your hand. Since the bands of muscles are fused, flexing one of them partially flexes the other. If your middle finger is extended completely, your muscle cannot contract any more to extend your ring finger. It is a nice story though!
people get divorced because they didn't marry their, "true partner," if you will. so when they find their true mate they won't separate. you have to remember that a lot of eastern culture is so abstract from our western minds that sometimes words don't translate as smoothly.

The reason why it is worn on the "ring finger", is because it's the only finger that has an artery that runs straight to the heart.
Once I separate my little fingers (children) I can separate my ring finger (life partner). Does this stand to show that children are the key to family. Also it is physically impossible to raise or lift you ring finger without your middle finger being in a flattened position due to the why the muscles in your hand are formed.

Meh. I think there's a lot of cultural bias that goes into assuming the family is 'supposed' to break apart like bacteria establishing new colonies. There's a lot to be said for staying near your family your whole life, especially when your family is composed of interesting, non-douchebaggy people who share the same core values as you.

While it's a nice story and it's fun to do, the fact is that the reason you can't move your ring finger is not because of your eternal devotion to your life partner, but rather your shared tendon in the middle and ring finger. All of our fingers have their own tendons, with the exception of middle and ring fingers where these tendons are connected. Simple as that.
