Gravity Powered Lights - free lighting to the developing world

Solar powered lighting may be all the rage these days when it comes to “green” lighting sources, but London based designers Martin Riddiford and Jim Reeves are looking to one up solar power with their Gravity Light.

Designed to replace the kerosene lamps widely used in remote areas of Africa, the Gravity Powered Light powers itself by gravity. Simply light the weight filled with rocks, sand, or Earth and the light will illuminate for 30 minutes. The innovative light costs $10 to buy with absolutely no running costs, meaning it will save them money in the long run. There are absolutely no batteries to run out, replace, or dispose of. The best part is, the Gravity Light can perform other tasks as well, including powering reading lights, radios, and even to recharge your batteries.  Support the project on Indie GoGo.
